Cannabis Clones: Buying, Transplanting & Care
Cannabis clones, also called cuttings, can skip the seed-germination stage and start with the genetics of an existing mother plant. But a rooted cutting is still a young, sensitive plant. Its roots, growing medium, temperature and the first days after changing environments make a real difference.
In this guide, we compare cannabis clones vs. seeds, explain what to check when selecting a cutting, describe careful transplanting and summarize important German rules concerning cannabis cuttings and commercial sales. Purchasing and cultivation rules can differ between jurisdictions.
- Clones are vegetatively propagated: they originate from a parent plant rather than a seed.
- Healthy roots matter: inspect color, condition and signs of pests or rot.
- Transplant gently: use a clean container, suitable medium and working drainage.
- Don't force growth: avoid excessive water, fertilizer and intense light immediately after transfer.
- Check the law: private cultivation permission does not automatically legalize every type of commercial rooted-plant sale.
What is a cannabis clone or cutting?
A cannabis cutting is a piece of stem taken from a parent plant and intended to develop into a separate plant. Once it forms roots, it is a rooted cutting. Growers commonly refer to these plants as clones, because vegetative propagation preserves the mother plant's basic genetic identity.
A clone may share genetic material with its mother, but that does not guarantee identical height, health, aroma or chemical output under different environmental conditions. Plant development still depends on growth conditions and plant condition.
Cutting or clone
Originates from existing plant tissue; may already have developed a root system.
Seedling
Emerges from a germinated seed; genetic identity depends on the seed and breeding.
Cannabis clones vs. seeds: which is better?
| Factor | Clones / cuttings | Seeds |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | Stem cutting, sometimes already rooted | Seed germination |
| Genetics | Shares genetic origin with mother plant | Depends on cultivar and seed source |
| Development | May be further along than a seedling | Starts with the germination stage |
| Main concerns | Root health, pests, transport stress | Seed viability and early establishment |
| Predictability | More predictable genetic background | Variation depends on seed type |
Neither option is universally easier. A clone avoids germination but requires careful attention to roots and possible pests. See how to germinate cannabis seeds if you prefer starting from seed.
What about autoflower clones?
Autoflowering cannabis tends to initiate flowering based largely on developmental age rather than an imposed day-length change. A true cutting carries the existing developmental status of its mother plant, so it cannot simply reset its age and start a full new vegetative phase.
Consequently, cloning autoflowers may be less practical than cloning photoperiod plants. Some sellers also use terms such as “autoflower clone” imprecisely for a young plant actually grown from seed. Check whether the offer describes a vegetatively propagated cutting or a seedling.
How to recognize a healthy cannabis clone
- Leaves: mostly healthy color, without widespread dead areas, sticky coatings or unusual damage.
- Stem: stable, not dark, soft or rotting.
- Roots: where visible, healthy-looking rather than slimy, foul-smelling or extensively damaged.
- Pests: inspect leaf undersides and new shoots for insects, webbing or feeding damage.
- Medium: moderately moist, not waterlogged or visibly moldy.
A little drooping after transport can be temporary. Persistently wet medium, a rotten smell and extensive wilting deserve more attention than a single leaf looking tired.
Can you buy cannabis clones in Germany?
Don't assume every offer is lawful. German law distinguishes between cannabis plants and propagating material under the Consumer Cannabis Act (KCanG). The private homegrow permission for qualifying adults is separate from rules on commercial supply and transfers.
In its 22 June 2026 decision, case 1 L 1051/26, the Cologne Administrative Court upheld an enforcement measure against a commercial supplier offering already planted young cannabis plants. The court also considered young plants placed into hydroponic nutrient solution to fall within the relevant cannabis-plant classification. This ruling means the label “clone” on a product page is not enough to establish that commercial delivery is permissible.
See the Federal Ministry of Health's KCanG FAQ and the VG Köln decision, 1 L 1051/26. Legal classification depends on the actual plant material and transaction. This section is general information, not legal advice.
What should you check when evaluating a clone supplier?
Some companies, including BubatzBuddy, have advertised cannabis-related young plant or propagation products. The presence of a website or offer does not establish legal permissibility. Before purchasing, independently check the product's actual status and the applicable laws at the seller's and recipient's locations.
- Is the item an unrooted cutting, rooted propagation material, an established potted young plant or a seedling?
- What exact cultivar and genetic lineage are claimed?
- Are provenance and plant-health details available?
- How are roots and foliage protected during transport?
- Does the specific sale or transfer comply with current law?
How many cannabis cuttings can you have under German law?
Germany permits qualifying adults to cultivate up to three living cannabis plants simultaneously at their residence or usual abode for personal consumption, subject to statutory rules. But the legal treatment of propagation material and established plants is not necessarily identical, and cultivation associations have separate distribution rules.
Check KCanG Section 9 and the legal classification of the particular plant material. Don't assume a seller's marketing label decides whether an established plant counts toward the applicable limit.
How to transplant a rooted cannabis cutting
Prepare a clean pot
Choose an appropriately sized container with drainage holes. A very large volume of unused medium may stay wet for too long around a small root system.
Use a light, well-aerated medium
Young roots need water and oxygen. Avoid heavy, compacted substrates and unnecessary high fertilizer concentrations.
Protect the root ball
Prepare a suitable hole and move the rooted cutting gently. If it sits in a propagation plug, keep the roots and plug intact wherever possible.
Settle the medium and water carefully
Fill around the roots, firm lightly for support and moisten the medium without leaving the container continuously saturated.
Allow the plant to acclimate
Maintain stable, moderate conditions. Avoid intense light, extreme temperature swings and direct high-speed airflow during the immediate adjustment period.
For choosing a larger final pot later, read our guide to transplanting cannabis.
Light, humidity and temperature after transplanting
A rooted cutting needs enough light for growth without unnecessary heat or light stress. Keep temperature relatively stable, avoid cold drafts and provide gentle air movement.
Young, weakly rooted plants may benefit from relatively higher humidity than established flowering plants, but constant wetness and stagnant air are not the goal. Rough reference values around 65–75% RH are sometimes used for young plants; unrooted cuttings may need different temporary conditions.
See our guides to cannabis humidity and VPD and indoor cultivation basics for more context.
When should you fertilize a cannabis clone?
Not automatically on the day you plant it. A rooted cutting with a small root system may be sensitive to unnecessary nutrient concentration. Pre-fertilized soil may already supply enough nutrition initially.
When the plant is established and additional nutrition is actually needed, an appropriate vegetative fertilizer can be considered according to its instructions. Granny's Weed sells an organic Grow fertilizer and a Grow & Bloom set for the subsequent development phases.
Granny's Grow & Bloom fertilizer set
An organic two-part system intended for the vegetative and flowering stages — not a reason to feed a newly transplanted cutting immediately. Follow product directions and consider what the substrate already contains.
Common problems with cannabis clones
Leaves drooping after planting
Possible causes include temporary relocation stress, too little or too much water, a weak root system or inappropriate temperature and humidity. Check the root zone before changing the feeding program.
Yellow leaves on a cutting
Yellowing doesn't automatically indicate nutrient deficiency. Saturated roots, light stress and environmental changes can create similar symptoms. See our yellow leaves guide for broader diagnosis.
A cutting stops growing
A brief pause after transplanting can occur while the roots adjust. Prolonged lack of growth calls for checking the medium, drainage, root condition and climate.
Dark, slimy or foul-smelling roots
These can indicate a compromised root environment. Check for persistent saturation, poor aeration and possible disease. Avoid increasing fertilizer in response.
Can rooted cannabis clones go outdoors?
Suitable plants can be transitioned outdoors where cultivation is lawful and the conditions are appropriate. A young indoor-grown plant may need gradual acclimatization to stronger sunlight, wind and outdoor temperature variation.
FAQ: cannabis clones and cuttings
What's the difference between a clone and a seedling?
A clone originates from a piece of an existing plant. A seedling develops after seed germination, with genetics determined by the seed.
How long do cannabis cuttings take to root?
Often approximately one to three weeks depending on genetics, method and environment; some cuttings root sooner or later.
Should you fertilize a rooted cutting immediately?
No universal requirement. Consider the root development, medium and fertilizer instructions before supplementing nutrients.
Are autoflower clones the same as autoflower seedlings?
No. A clone is vegetatively propagated and carries its mother's developmental status, whereas a seedling develops from seed.
Is buying rooted clones online legal in Germany?
Do not assume a blanket permission. The Cologne Administrative Court's 2026 decision illustrates restrictions on commercial supply of established young cannabis plants. Check the exact material and current law before any purchase.
How many plants can an adult grow privately in Germany?
Up to three simultaneously for eligible adults under the KCanG, subject to other legal requirements. Propagation material can require separate legal classification.
Bottom line
A good clone needs a healthy root system, a suitable medium and a calm start. Known genetics can be useful, but cuttings aren't maintenance-free. And with commercial purchases in Germany, the legal status of the actual material matters much more than what a seller calls it.
